About the trail

Forested trail to Ambanaw Paoay. The first part of trail is a little bit steep, but take your time to catch your breath and relax the chill winds coming from the east. If you started very early, you can enjoy the cool air seeping through your sweaty clothes. That means you don't get thirsty very often, so at least for me, it is recommended to bring at least 2 liters of water. Don't also forget your lunch and trail foods!

Ambanaw Paoay Rolling Hills to Gungal Rock. The hills are open grasslands** which is really glorious on its own, you can see Mt. Ugo, Mt. Pulag, Mt. Sto Tomas, Mt. Cabuyao and Baguio city if the weather clears the skies and of course, it is sunny.

Gungal Rock to Mt. Ulap peak and Campsite. This is still part of the rolling hills. Starts with a descent and a little assault going to the one true summit of Mt. Ulap. Make sure to catch your breath at this point. At the second hill just after the peak (it has a cemented block from 1930 if I remember correctly), you can see the campsite below. The campsite is pretty nice and open, so you can rest there for a bit. Walk a little bit further and you will reach a store. We didn't go further since it is a little bit crowded from the people from the reverse traverse.

Forested steep descent, this last part is a steep descent, forested area with pine trees going to Sta. Fe. The trail would definitely beat your knees going down, so be prepared with your jogging routine before the hike. It may take you at least an hour and a half to go down to the Sta. Fe exit. There are a few homes after forested area where you can buy softdrinks and snacks. Just perfect for the long trail.

After the hike, tidy up with the bathrooms and if you are on commute, you have to wait for the jeep going to Baguio city. Ask the locals to make sure there are still jeepneys around by the time you are ready to leave.

So what do you expect during your hike?

  • There are no water sources available in the hike. However because of the all-year round cool atmosphere in the Cordilleras, it is seldom that you have to drink because of thirst. So it is recommended to bring at least 2 liters of water for the whole hike.

  • Cellphone signal is visibly present along the trails due to its proximity in Baguio city and the other populated parts of Cordillera. However, it is a little bit weak for Pokemon Go and Facebook Live.

  • The trail is friendly for beginners. There are no limatik, rattan, river crossings, tall grass or rock climbing. However, it is always necessary to exercise and prepare before climbing Mt. Ulap. It is registered with a difficulty of 3/9 but the traverse may count as 4/9 due to its steep trail. Difficulty can increase if continuous rain comes down.
