The Philippines is an archipelagic country located in Southeast Asia and situated west of the Pacific Ocean with its 7,641 islands. There are three geographic island groups in the Philippines: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. The Philippines has a total land area of 300,000 sq. km. The Philippines shares a maritime border with Taiwan, China, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam.

The capital of the Philippines is the city of Manila and the most populous city is Quezon city where both cities are located in the Metro Manila in the island of Luzon. Metro Manila is an economic hub with approximately 13 million people living in the 16 cities and 1 municipality. Metro Manila is considered the politicial, economic and cultural center in the Philippines and it is the main GDP contributor to the country's growth.

The Philippines is a biologically diverse country rich in rainforests and its extensive coastlines and it is home to a diverse group of birds, mammals. The famous mammal is the Philippine tarsier, one of the smallest primates. The Philippine eagle is the national bird that is also known as the monkey-eating eagle and it is considered critically endangered.

The Philippines has two official languages, Filipino and English. Filipino is based on Tagalog that is spoken by the majority particularly in Luzon. English is widely used formally as the medium of instruction in education and in the business as well. Being ethnically diverse, there are more than 100 languages in the Philippines, the majority is Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilokano, Hiligaynon and Waray.

Geography

Located near the equator, the Philippines is a tropical country where there are only 2 seasons: the wet season from June-November and the dry season from December-May. The wet season is usually the typhoon season where the country experiences strong rain fall across the country.

If you are going swim to beaches and visit islands, it is recommended to visit the Philippines during the dry season especially from late March to middle of May.

Directions

The Philippines is separated by the sea so traveling to other islands requires you to take ferries or commercial flight. The usual flight route from Manila to Davao city takes 1-2 hours with local carriers such as Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific and Air Asia. Across the archipelago, there are multiple sea routes available depending on your destination from boat rides to ferries.

The Philippines has short distance vehicles called tricycles, for commuting there are jeepneys and city buses. For long distance road travel across provinces, there are buses available on different terminals.

Philippines does not have a concept of stop overs, so you can hop in in the jeepney routes along the road.
