7 important lessons I learned from traveling in my 20's
Hi I'm Juan Miguel Gaudiel Alvarez, a 23 year old guy from the Philippines who has been traveling around random places.
Traveling has always been an adventure for me and I get to meet new friends, experience deep moments of revelation and to enjoy the sun, sea and clouds. This year I've been to a lot of new places and I've learned a lot from these travels and finally decided to share them with you guys here.
Here are the lessons I've learned so far from my travels:
1. To be more grateful
Face it, being in the modern society with our time being sucked in by social media leaves us being too passive with life. We get to talk to someone just by opening our messenger app and find out answers just by doing a search on google.
Traveling gives me time to be away from all these conveniences and go back to basics of life, having shelter, food and water.
Being away from the comforts of home make you feel that you understand life a little more and that you begin to appreciate everything you've been taking for granted so far.
2. To treat life like one big adventure
During my travels I learned to shoot for the stars and to hope for great things. Seeing a sky open up in front of you as you reach the top of a mountain gives you a feeling of openness to the universe and what it has to offer. Suddenly big things seem possible.
Traveling gave me a contrast between my life and the grandeur of creation. I realized that traveling opens us up for endless possibilities, and in that moment you begin to realize just how big your opportunities are.
3. To travel light
Being always ready for adventure I had developed a sense of urgency when it comes to being ready when someone invites me on a journey. I always have the necessary things on hand to leave in a moment's notice.
It has also allowed me to prioritize what I just need and to think less of things during travels. By bringing along only the important things I am able to be present and enjoy the moment as it comes.
Of course if we don't learn to prioritize in life we begin to feel overburdened and that can lead to burnout. So the same thing applies to us everyday, to simply bring what you need and to travel as light as you can :)
4. Sometimes it's not easy but it will be worth it.
There are many times that I've pondered about the hardships that come from climbing mountains, but I always keep coming back for more. It's just like I never learn from the pain I experience in climbing them.
But then I always eventually reach the top no matter how hard the climb is, and that's when you begin to realize that hardships really just make victory all the more sweeter and that once you reach the top, you'll see that it's all worth it.
So whatever you're experiencing in life right now, just keep on trudging on and you'll eventually reach the top.
5. Respect for God's creations
When you find yourself in the middle of a clear river under some trees and sunlight, you'll be aware of the life around you. That you're connected with all of it somehow and that every living thing around you was placed there for a reason.
Once you get back to civilization you begin to have more compassion for people, even those annoying people that easily tick you off. You will be able to appreciate your life and the life of others more.
6. To seek the sun and enjoy the rainI've always loved the sun and I can't help but expect the best out of every trip that I have, but then there will be times that the sun simply doesn't shine. Sometimes it will rain and your expectations might be swept away in an instant...
Or you can simply carry on and enjoy the beauty of rain and appreciate it for what it is.
Sometimes in life we expect sunshine but when rain comes we have to learn to dance with it
7. To enjoy life and look to the positive side of things. There will always be challenges along the way but it will be up to you on how you want to approach these challenges, you can approach them with a negative mindset and not to continue the trip or simply smile and take these challenges head on and come out stronger on the other side.
Traveling enables me to look at problems realistically but face them with a kind of unyielding positivity. Throughout my travels I'm able to share this positivity with the people that I meet, whether it's a long deep conversation or a simple friendly smile.
The smiles and positive attitude that you gather along with you on your trips are valuable, you can take them back home and share them with the people you love.
What's your next adventure?
Traveling will always give valuable lessons in life besides being able to calm you after a stressful week at work. It takes us out of our comfort zone and tosses us out into an unknown and beautiful world.
For me, I will always keep seeking and going to the adventure that God points me to. I will always gladly travel to new places and revisit old ones with a new pair of eyes. To be able to understand life a little more one adventure at a time.
And those are the main lessons I've learned by travelling. I know there will be more to come. I hope you were inspired to travel and see the world with your own eyes. Take week off and find an adventure of your own and share them to others :)
